Maternal, Newborn and Child Health & Gender

TAConnect is at the forefront of transforming maternal and newborn health outcomes in Nigeria. We design and scale interventions that address both clinical gaps in care and the gender-related barriers that prevent women and girls from accessing services.

Our Programs & Interventions

Our flagship program, Group Antenatal Care (G-ANC) is the largest rollout in sub-Saharan Africa, reaching over 1 million pregnant women across seven states within 2 years. G-ANC shifts antenatal care from isolated, individualized visits to structured group sessions that combine clinical services, peer support, participatory learning, and counseling. This model improves service uptake, continuity of care, and trust in the health system, while also creating platforms for integrating complementary interventions such as Malaria in Pregnancy (MiP) prevention, postpartum family planning (PPFP), nutrition, and postnatal care (PNC).
We are dedicated to improving immunization coverage in vulnerable communities. Our immunization program in Kano state addresses both demand and supply-side barriers by integrating vaccination with maternal, newborn, and child health services. Through community-driven solutions, health education, and collaboration with local leaders and caregivers, we ensure culturally sensitive interventions that build trust and promote behavior change. This holistic approach enhances vaccination uptake while also improving access to family planning and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, ultimately reducing preventable diseases and fostering healthier communities.
We also strengthen community-based service delivery through trained volunteers, CHIPS agents, and referral networks. By utilizing a hub-and-spoke approach, we improve linkages between communities, PHC facilities, and higher-level health facilities for timely case management.
TAConnect has conducted state-level gender analyses that inform program design and implementation. By embedding gender considerations in MNH interventions, we ensure that solutions address structural inequities, shift social and cultural norms, and create enabling environments for women and girls to access services safely and equitably.

Our Impact

Measurable results that demonstrate our commitment to lasting change

1,041,459 pregnant women enrolled in Group ANC with increased coverage and improved retention

1,028,766 pregnant women were reached with high-quality MNH services through G-ANC

7,353 community volunteers trained to deliver care, mobilize demand, and strengthen referrals

93% facility delivery among women enrolled in Group-ANC

90% of G-ANC participants delivered in facilities, compared to lower averages under traditional ANC

25% of postpartum women adopted contraception before discharge, improving maternal and child health outcomes

64,325 children reached with vaccination in 54 health facilities within 8 months

3,244 outreaches conducted to reduce barriers impacting access to vaccination

69% increase in uptake and retention of children 0-11 months preventing missed vaccinations

98% uptake and retention among children 12-23 months reached for missed vaccinations

Gender-responsive strategies embedded in state MNH programming, ensuring inclusion and equity

Every day, 225 Nigerian women die from preventable pregnancy-related complications. Our integrated MNH+G approach addresses both medical causes of mortality (like hemorrhage, infection, and eclampsia) and the social drivers of poor outcomes (gender inequality, stigma, limited autonomy). This dual focus ensures sustainable improvements in maternal and newborn survival.
